WHAT IS BRAKE ADJUSTMENT?

A typical braking system uses disc brakes at the front of the car and drum brakes at the rear. The adjuster may also be a star wheel accessible through a hole in the backplate or the front of the brake drum. You may have to take the wheel off to reach it. The adjusters are exposed to weather and dirt, and are prone to seizure. Lubricate them with penetrating oil an hour or two before you start work, and again just before you turn them. With Wrench mobile service, you get the job done by an experienced mobile mechanic while you get on with your day.

HOW IS BRAKE ADJUSTMENT DONE?

  • To adjust the brakes you need to locate the cutout on the backing plate that gives you access to the brake adjuster.
  • Once you have removed the plug you can insert a flat-head screwdriver into the hole to push the lever holding the brake adjuster in place away from the adjuster.
  • If so you need to spin the adjuster in the other direction. After a few rotations of the adjuster you need to center the brake shoes.
  • Once you have the brakes adjusted to your liking engage the parking brake and push the brake pedal to the floor.
  • If one of the tires is holding and the other is not you need to adjust the parking brake cable where it splits into two cables. Once you have the brakes and the parking brakes adjusted to your liking release the parking brake and make sure the tires spin again. Lastly don’t forget to put the rubber plugs back into the cutouts.

    RECOMMENDATIONS

It is recommended for you to check running clearance regularly, because as pads and discs wear, the clearance steadily increases. All air disc brakes are fitted with an automatic adjuster which self-adjusts during brake applications to accommodate for brake pad and disc wear.

SYMPTOMS THAT INDICATE YOU NEED A BRAKE ADJUSTMENT
